Soaking up Spain

Paakto: to go out, date

The Pearl River runs through the city of Guangdong (previously Canton).  Due to its wide banks and its busy water traffic, people use a special way to pull boats through the river.  They place two boats side by side and tie them together with ropes.  When one of them moves, the other follows.  This method is called Paakto, and the term is also used to describe lovers who walk hand in hand.

I am proof that you can still paakto after marriage.  My husband and I will be traveling to Spain this week!  (I’m not the only wandering scribe, though.  Fellow writer Mona AlvaradoFrazier is going to France in September.  ¡El mundo es un pañuelo!)

I’m visiting Madrid and Barcelona during this trip.  Along with some relaxing, I’ll be stoking my creative fire.  I believe that others’ artistic works will inspire me, so on Madrid’s to-do list is El Prado, the Spanish national museum, and a flamenco show.  In Barcelona, I’m excited to experience Gaudi‘s distinctive architecture.  Closer to the writing front, I’ll visit the statues of Don Quixote and Sancho Panza.  I’ll also be exploring the Barrio de las Letras, where the homes of Lope de Vega, Quevedo, Gongora and Cervantes are still preserved.

I look forward to sharing my experience with everyone in a future post.
