White Hair Is In!

Elsa

Platinum is in, and I’m not talking about jewelry. I’ve seen several magazines cover the new white hair craze. Is it an Elsa fad or what? Bleaching your hair takes a lot of work, involving:

  • Heavy time investment (takes at least 8 hours to color)
  • Chemical toxins (breathing in noxious bleach fumes)
  • Frequent touch-ups (often taking four hours at a time)
  • High expenses (requires monthly maintenance)
  • Wardrobe change (necessitates different clothes & makeup to complement)

In high school, I had an Asian friend with grey in her hair (not entirely white like Soo Joo Park, but a small streak). She felt self-conscious at times, but I thought it had a nice flair. And this was before Rogue’s fame from the first X-men movie. I myself still have virgin hair, unless you count the one time I had highlights (a splurge, but hair salons are so much cheaper in Malaysia).

Do you or have you ever dyed your hair? What about going grey on purpose?

Oh, I don’t know. The times I tried blond-ish for the sake of blending away grey hair, I felt so washed out and not myself. I think I just really love being a brunette. But, if my hair weren’t ugly salt and pepper and were that true beautiful silvery grey, I’d so rock that! :D

I know people who rock the salt-n-pepper look, too. Right now I’m leaning towards not dyeing, but who knows? I had a friend who totally thought she wouldn’t and then wound up changing her mind.

  2. I have never dyed my hair and I hope to be able to keep my original light brown color as long as possible. My grandparents and parents got gray and white hair very late in their lives, so…
One of my bosses had gray hair when she turned forty. Her husband wanted her to dye it but she didn’t. I was fifteen years younger back then and found her very attractive and classy. Her hair was thick, well cut and the color was a gorgeous silver. I’m glad she didn’t listen to her husband! On the other hand, gray can be dull and in this case I would consider artifical help to make it look nice and shiny. Coloring or not our hair is a question of confidence. For women it is hard to ignore the pressure of looking forever young, so I totally understand that women choose to dye their hair if it helps them feel better. I’ll see when I get there!

I find it really interesting that her husband wanted her to dye her hair. Usually, it’s the women who are thinking about these issues more.
