Preparing for A Mother’s Day Launch

“You have an important new business development shaping up.”

Note: None of these answers are actually accurate.

Mark this date on your calendars: May 9, 2015. That’s right. I’ll be launching my self-published book out into the world right before Mother’s Day this year. The impetus for doing this is to honor my mom because she first introduced me to mystery books. (Thanks, Mom!)

Here’s an update on what I’ve been doing to prepare the manuscript:

  • Editing: I’ve decided to go with a developmental edit to identify issues with the storyline and to make sure it retains the proper structure and suspense of a mystery. I’ll also be getting my manuscript copyedited to ensure that sentence structure and grammar errors will be fixed. All the rewriting and revising will take place during this short month, so February will be very busy!
  • Cover design: I’ve also hired a cover designer to create a layout for both the e-book and print versions. I looked on Amazon and provided her with samples of covers I enjoyed and to give her an idea of the quirky images that often grace cozy mysteries. She’ll be providing me with potential designs over the next few months that I’ll get to comment on.

For writers, what’s the latest on your writing journey? For everyone, what are your plans this coming Mother’s Day?

Congratulations Jennifer! I hope the launch goes absolutely brilliantly. :D Latest writing journey…hmm…yesterday, I helped our Russian student write a complex essay comparing and contrasting early 20C art in Russia and Canada, and dictated a rough conclusion. (Those conclusions seem to be the hardest things for the kids to write) And I loved every minute of it and probably “helped” more than I should have. I really miss writing sometimes. Must just buckle down and write more, but some days it seems like something has to be put aside, and since it can’t be the art or the photography (got a mortgage) it usually is the writing. Mother’s Day…hmm…hopefully I’ll be in E, but E or Van, I have absolutely no idea. :D

Thanks, Veronica. Wow, I can’t even imagine advising anyone about Russian and Canadian art. Kudos to you!

  2. Sounds exciting. Good luck in getting everything ready. Currently I’m shopping around my second novel while I’m working on my third. Writing requires oodles of patience, doesn’t it?

  3. I’m impressed by your endeavor to self publish. You’ve got your hands full, but I can see how mucg this projct means to you. Congratulations! Looking forward to the cover reveal and the book debut!

  4. Thank you for also having time for us, Jennifer! That May 9th we’ll be there :)

  5. I’m very excited for you, Jennifer, and applaud your decision. I’m also eager to read your book because I had never heard of cozy mystery before you introduced me to the genre. The date of publication is also well picked. I wish you lots of success.

Thanks, Evelyne. It should be a fun pick for anyone who’s looking for a light-hearted mystery. Maybe even for a busy mom you might know that could use the relaxation.

  6. How exciting! I wish you lots of good luck (and sales!), and I can’t wait to read this cozy mystery. I think Mother’s Day is a great time to launch… I like to give books for Mother’s Day gifts, and I’m sure I’m not alone. In fact, last year I did some micro reviews for Mother’s Day… perhaps I could include your mystery in this year’s post? Let me know.
