Virtual Bouchercon

There is such a thing as conference fatigue. I had a fabulous time this past weekend with 900 or so other friends checking out Bouchercon 2020. Though I didn’t get to travel to the state capital and frolic in Sacramento, I still got to attend the event virtually.

The highlights of the event were:

  • Pre-taped videos:
High-quality video interviews with amazing people like Walter Mosley, Anne Perry, Catriona McPherson, and the past presidents of Sisters in Crime
  • Live presentations:
Unique panels included the “Not So Secret Lives of Authors,” a session where each author talked about the odd and amazing stories that have happened to them. There was even a live murder mystery event that got participants guessing at the real culprit. (I myself was on a much more tame but fur-friendly panel called, “Our Furry Friends.”)
  • Live Anthony Awards Banquet:
Even though, it was “bring your own food,” I got to see the winners announced live for this year’s awards. I even sat at the same “table” as my Chicks on the Case besties. (We did so by group texting each other during the event.)

So, what were the pros and cons of a virtual Bouchercon?

  • Pros: Comfy clothes, Links to cool videos, More accessibility for writers and readers all over the world to attend
  • Cons: No mingling, Same setting–my computer, Screen staring

Anyway, I’m looking forward to continuing to connect with my tribe at future events!
