Foodie Friday: Stretchy Ice Cream

Stretchy ice cream: dense, creamy, and pliable frozen dessert Who knew stretchy ice cream was a thing? Well, I didn’t. Not until one family member had to do a project about ice cream versus gelato versus… (Whether this was an actual research project or something they made up has yet to be revealed.) Anyway, stretchy ice cream does stretch, but it’s not super elastic. If you’re thinking rubber bands, you’d be wrong. There is a kind of give to the ice cream, though, and it’s quite fun to … [Read more...]

Foodie Friday: Matcha Ice Cream

Matcha ice cream: green tea ice cream I know it's not summertime, but ice cream can be eaten any time, right? Since I enjoy tea, I like to get matcha ice cream once in a while. It's got this nice earthy flavor that counterbalances the sweetness of the dessert. When the creaminess is done just right, it really does remind me of properly blended matcha tea. Do you have a favorite ice cream flavor, or do you like to mix it up? … [Read more...]

Foodie Friday: Boba milk tea ice cream bar

Boba milk tea ice cream bar: boba—but as a popsicle! My brother kept telling me about these, but whenever I popped by the grocery store, I couldn’t find them in the freezer aisle. I finally located a box the other week. Hurrah! They actually really taste like milk tea, with that decadent flavor combo of rich black tea and sweetened milk. (Perhaps a little too sweet.) The tapioca balls are frozen, so they’re not quite the same chewy texture. If you lick the ice cream bar, though, it … [Read more...]

Foodie Friday: Ube Soft Serve

Ube soft serve: purple yam ice cream When it gets hot during the summer, I turn to cool things. And what's cooler than an amazingly bright purple ice cream? Yep, it's ube soft serve. Ube is a type of root vegetable (chock-full of vitamin C, thank you very much). As expected, it tastes earthy, much like sweet potato and taro. The brilliant thing (I couldn't resist) about ube is its lovely color! The hue just makes you smile. A lot of Filipino desserts will incorporate ube in their … [Read more...]

Foodie Friday: Green Tea Float

I've had root beer floats, but never before a... Tea float: ice cream in green tea This is ingenious! I ordered matcha ice cream on top of the tea for extra green tea flavor. It's a refreshing treat during hot times (like the upcoming heat wave). I like how the tea is fresh brewed and pure. Then the ice cream adds a hint of sweetness for a dessert-like drink. Cheers! … [Read more...]

Foodie Friday First: Durian Ice Cream

Tried out… Durian ice cream: creamy, powerful-tasting ice cream You can smell this “king of the fruits” from a mile away. There’s a certain almost rotting quality to the stench. It makes you want to crinkle your hose. It’s hard to describe the durian taste—a mouthful of flavor that hits you in the stomach; an earthy, pungent flavor. But I figured that would be reduced in ice cream. Nope. It’s still got super intense taste (and smell). Thankfully, it was tempered by the egg waffle. Fun … [Read more...]

Foodie Friday First: Nitrogen Ice Cream

Oh yeah, I tried that. Nitrogen ice cream: ice cream made under super cold conditions  I went and visited Creamistry, an ice cream shop that uses liquid nitrogen to produce its goods. Since it uses the quick chemical process, it ends up flash-freezing the batch of ice cream. It's actually really neat to watch, all mist and icy temperatures. However, the actual product itself was a let down. Perhaps because there isn't any slow churning involved, the scoop ends up being super dense, … [Read more...]

Foodie Friday: Panda Ice Cream Bar

I don't know what's going on with the weather. It's been crazy hot recently. But fall has already started, right? (The first day of the autumnal equinox landed on September 22nd.) Nevertheless, we've been battling high temperatures (even close to 100 degrees!) in the Los Angeles area. Weird. And, of course, we don't have AC. We have windows and ceiling fans...and ice cream bars. Panda ice cream bar: ice cream in an adorable bear shape Isn't this so cute? Sure, it's just chocolate and … [Read more...]
