Candy Cravings

“Now is the time to try something new.”

Tried these fancy Japanese gummies, but I think I'll stick with the tried and true ones!

Tried these fancy Japanese gummies, but I think I’ll stick with the tried and true ones!

I’ve been going around to different stores and seeing their Halloween displays (although some places have Christmas decorations up already!).

The end of October always reminds me of candy, and I remember swapping treats as kids for our preferred kinds every October 31. Speaking of candy cravings, here are my top three Asian picks:

1. Gummies/mochis: These are prepackaged round gummies in exotic flavors, like mango. Also, there are individually wrapped mochis (brown sugar, fruit, etc.).

2. Jelly things: These are little tubs of jello (sometimes with fruit inside). I used to love the lychee ones! Warning: they are choking hazards for young kids.

3. White rabbit candy: This milk candy is sweet and chewy. The best part is the rice paper that goes around it. Edible wrapping always amazes me. (Unfortunately, a few years ago there was this whole melamine scare with them. Uh oh.)

What’s your favorite candy?

Foodie Friday: Pork Stew
Foodie Friday First: Jerk Chicken

I’ve tried all of these, can’t say I was a fan :( Chloe loved the little lychee jello tubs though. Her favourite really bad for you treat is Hi Chew in green apple, but the things are so full of preservatives and colour that she very rarely has them. Also, I think it’s because we rarely eat sugar, that the craving isn’t there, but sometimes we have a student bring us something absolutely irresistible and so completely yummy, we eat the lot. Just lately it was a Brazilian student and she brought us a bag of Sonho de Valsa chocolates filled with a Nutella-type filling of Brazil nuts! Thank goodness they’re not for sale in Canada.

I like that idea of just trying international treats once in a while. I remember when my kids first tried Kinder Eggs and loved them–but maybe because of the prizes!

  2. Those gummies are almost too pretty to eat!

I love M&Ms. You can make a handful last a while so you’re not tempted to eat as many. Well, that’s the plan, anyway. ;)

  3. White Rabbit candy reminds me of my childhood. Too bad that melamine scare ruined it for everyone.

  4. Oh you get me with any kind of gummy candy. Your selection is totally mouth watering. I also find pretty sad to see the holiday decorations already up in the stores. East or West coast do the same. Too bad. Happy pre Halloween candy hunting!

Thanks for commenting, Evelyne! Halloween is hit-n-miss with the kids. Sometimes the decorations are too scary for them :(
