Foodie Friday First: Jerk Chicken

Jerk chicken: spiced up chicken from Jamaica

jerk chicken

My first thought is: What a harsh name! Actually, the jerk comes from the same roots as jerky. Also, some folks say that jerking means poking holes in the meat to absorb the flavor.

I was inspired to eat this dish after reading about it in Jennifer Weiner’s IN HER SHOES. Some books really do make me hungry. Anyway, jerk chicken is extremely flavorful. I love how the spicy and sweet work together to give this meat a kick. Plus, I ate this at a charity event, so a double-thumbs up from me!

Have you ever decided to eat something after reading about it in a book?

I’ve never had a “real” jerk chicken, like you know, from a Jamaican restaurant or in Jamaica (mainly because I’ve never been there…lol) but I used to really enjoy mixing my own jerk spices from Emeril Lagasse’s book. Wonder why I stopped. Must drag that book out again. I read that book some years ago and really enjoyed it. I’ve read several of her books I think. And, while I’ve never cooked or eaten anything because of a non-cookbook book, I have created flower arrangements to mimic a few of the Flemish great masters paintings…lol. By the way, I think the Flemish masters used to lie like a rug. There is no way they had tulips and peonies blooming at the same time to pick them and arrange them and paint them! Just saying. :D

Wow, you made your own spice rub. I’m pretty impressed. Those flower arrangements must have been lovely–if anyone could work the magic and make those blossoms go together, it would be you!

  2. This looks really good. I don’t think I’ve ever been enticed to try a new dish based on a book. But there’s always tomorrow…
